Barcelona Media - Innovation Centre is a technology centre aimed at fostering competitiveness in companies in the communication sector. This is achieved by promoting innovation in the development of

new products and services, and by establishing more efficient production processes. The centre’s work is based on knowledge transfer, through the integration of research groups and specialized laboratories in joint projects with companies and institutions.

The media sector is comprised of a wide variety of industrial activities:

Animation, computer technology, graphics, web services and content, music, press, product design and innovation, cinema, services and content for mobile phones and PDA, television, radio, games, advertising and publishing companies, human language technologies, e-learning, visualisation, virtual reality, cultural heritage, media applications for tourism, theme parks.

Barcelona Media:
1) Promotes and carries out R+D+i projects
2) Is a meeting point to encourage R+D projects linking academic and industrial research
3) Offers R+D transfer services to companies in the sector

Barcelona Media’s scientific project is being developed through 6 lines of activity:

Image: Development of image enhancement to allow recognition, localization, object manipulation, as well as three-dimensional reconstruction and new view generation.

Voice and Language: Development of technologies to harness human language in both its oral and written forms in IT systems.

Audio: Development of technologies for the creation, manipulation, 3D audio exhibition rendering to allow immersive three-dimensional acoustic environments in which the audio will automatically adapt to the visual content in audiovisual production.

Information Management: Research into technologies to allow large quantities of content to be organised and stored in repositories, together with the technologies necessary for selecting and accessing this content in a satisfactory way.

Cognition and Interactivity: Cognitive and emotional processes related to the perception, interpretation and interaction with audiovisual media.

Information, Technology and Society: Empirical research on the characterization and modelling of social networks and “social media”. Design and piloting of experiments and projects about the interrelation of this new channel, with business practices and with the development of the information society in general.

The centre has 2 transfer laboratories:

Virtual Visualization Lab: Creation of real time multidimensional graphic simulations. The laboratory’s projects are based on three lines of activity: urban development, interactive marketing and virtual training.

Culture and Tourism Lab: Design and development of cultural projects incorporating value through social innovation, the conception of spaces and services, and comprehensive planning. The technological innovations from Barcelona Media’s different units are incorporated into projects for cultural, leisure and tourism purposes.
